# What a Verifiable Credential is

*A Verifiable Credential is a digitally signed record of something you proved — built so someone else can check it without taking your word for it.*

## The short version

Most things you can show an employer — a screenshot, a PDF certificate, a LinkedIn badge — are just claims. Someone has to trust that you didn't edit the image or exaggerate the title. A Verifiable Credential is different: it's a signed record, tied to both the issuer (cubelet.ai) and you, built to be checked independently rather than taken on faith.

## Not locked to this platform

A Verifiable Credential isn't a screenshot of your Passport or a certificate PDF you have to trust at face value. It's a shareable record designed for someone outside cubelet.ai — a hiring manager, an auditor, a partner organization — to verify without needing an account here or a phone call to confirm it's real. ## What earns one

A Verifiable Credential isn't issued for reading a Cubelet or opening a drill. It's issued when you pass a scored Case — the judgment simulation launched from a Cubelet's APPLY action. In the product's own words, credentials "appear here once simulations are passed in Pursuit" (Pursuit being the route behind what your sidebar calls In Progress). Each one that compiles shows up as a row in your Passport's Competency Attestations table, with columns for the competency code, the competency itself, its depth, and when it was attested.

## Why this is different from a certificate

A certificate tells someone you finished something. A Verifiable Credential is built so a third party can check that the record itself is genuine — without emailing anyone to confirm it. See Sharing & verifying for how someone outside cubelet.ai actually does that check.
